10057951 No.10057951 [Reply] [Original]

How do we create nodes of quality seriousposting amidst the nonstop shitty low-effort joke threads?

I don't mind shitposting but nearly every thread is now a dumb gay little reference to the Wikipedia summary of a book or author. It isn't even funny shitposting.

i'd be more likely to do quality seriousposting if i thought the thread wouldn't be randomly deleted by the mods and replaced with a peterson advertisement or dfw face dump, you only have to get burned a few times by writing a 10 minute reply, hit post and get "404 specified thread does not exist" before you never invest more than 30 seconds in a reply again

Two biggest issues on /lit/:

>Userbase
Currently comprised mostly of /pol/, /r9k/, people who don't read at all and just come to make bait threads, and in general just low quality posters. The only way to fix this is to just not be like this. Be the change you want to see in the board, don't respond to bait threads, read and then create thoughtful threads, and try not to get discouraged. This is 4chan after all, this place will always be shitty, you will never be able to rid the board of /pol/ and shitposting unless moderation improves, so just raise your own standards and post better content. This brings us to

>Moderation
Practically no jannies and shit mods. As members of lit we can't change much about this. There are ways to of course, but for the most part the best current solution is just improve the quality of posts on the board as stated above

10058965

Practically speaking /lit/'s problem comes from the inherent nature of general, non book specific threads. If you want to discus a book it requires a prerequisite: Having actually read the book. In this sense, book specific threads are bound to get only a small portion of the general users discussing it. Furthermore, people who are able to discuss it are generally people who actually read as a hobby, a small percentage of people. Now take the general, non book specific discussion; There are less prerequisites required to discuss it. This is why you see Jordan Peterson threads (which have nothing to do with literature) getting 200+ replies while actual book discussions barely peaking 50—The only thing you need to do to discuss Jordan Peterson is watch a 20 minute video. This in turn creates a snowball effect, where new people come to the board, see that it's filled with general, non book related discussions, and jump in straight away with their inane opinions. There is no reason to have, as there is right now in the catalog, a thread titled "How to become impulsive and blindly passionate? I need my animal side to arise because I'm falling into a void of apathy and passiveness" as it has nothing to do with literature, a book, a work of philosophy, or anything like that. Another problem comes in the form of generalized philosophy discussions, as it has the same effect of allowing low-investment posters to self-perpetuate their existence on the board without having to read anything. If the sticky was actually adhered to—that philosophy discussion has to be about a specific book—then this wouldn't be a problem.
Then you have the "ideological battleground" posters who think the entire internet is a grand-strategy game of turning one website/board "left-leaning" or "right-leaning" by engaging in pathetic bait threads, ironically acting like a caricature of their ideological enemy, and generally shitting up the board. It baffles me that someone would spend their time posting variations on the theme of "culture of critique" in every thread, pretending to be a retarded /pol/ user, attempting to turn people against /pol/. The same goes for /pol/ fuckers posting Marxism bait threads. We don't want to discuss politics.
As long as moderation remains so passive, anyone who wants to actually discuss literature is fighting an uphill battle against a horde of low-investment posters. There isn't much you can do to stop that.

>> No.10058975

Nah, generals are good because they are easier to filter.

>> No.10058995

The board is fine and it's a positive thing to have moderators who don't rule with a heavy hand and allow a free-range of discussion. That is what distinguishes this place from reddit, lest we forget. What the same handful of people are complaining about is the increase in users who are aware of and speak openly about the jewish question in related threads dealing with postmodernism, Marxism, and a few other topics. But that comes up because it's impossible to separate those topics from the heavy jewish involvement in their origins and cultural perpetuation, and only bothers a small subset that seems larger than it really is because they are more prone to whine and complain loudly: jews and numale-type kids whose postmodern identities are tethered to the contemporary leftist zeitgeist. The issue, however, ultimately lies within these people and results from their inability to grasp or confront reality; the facts are the facts, the information is in, these people just don't want to accept it for whatever reason.

Other than that gorilla in the room, there is usually good advice given and often decent discussion about important books in the western canon, so I don't really see a big problem other than that which revolves around the posters mentioned above, who are far more of an issue, as they often scream at the top of their lungs and cause disruptions when those wiser and better-read than themselves present information that challenges the mainstream narrative embedded within them. But again, such antics and childish behavior stem from a small cohort. This is a board dedicated to the discussion of white culture. It's very natural that those who are the most educated on and passionate about it have a strong sense of who they are and a desire to protect it from those whom it doesn't belong to, or who mistakenly believe this bred-in-the-bone aspect can or should be left out or not spoken of. If you want to live in that type of fantasy realm, you don't belong here, you belong over at reddit; and you are doing a disservice to others and demeaning the spread of knowledge itself when you try to stifle discussion and promote censorship policies that would only cause this place to resemble reddit. We only need one reddit. More moderation is not the answer and I'd like to see more shaming on here when posters advocate for more moderation, which of course implies more moderation of the viewpoints in opposition to their own.

Maybe a little bit better because there is a certain degree of self-awareness and elitism that's expected of posters, unlike the earliest days when you had people making South Park references, trollface posts, and Douglas Adams threads

There are many leftists ITT who are resentful about being purged by their ideological equivalents from /pol/. Now that is different. Marxists used to be a lot more common here and much more comfortable sharing off-topic leftist viewpoints in attempts at on-topic threads, but they've since been pushed to leftypol and the backwaters of /his/. Some still hang around and poke their heads up occasionally, and they make their whiny voices heard in meta threads like these.

Anyways, they are doing their best to craft this narrative that the days of Brownbear and I'm a huge Orson Welles were some sort of Enlightenment-era French salon where people regularly discussed the complexities of Kant and didn't scoff at black literature. Then, the story goes, pol ruined everything and forced everybody to roll their eyes at Zora Neale Hurston and watch Jordan Peterson interviews with Joe Rogan.

This is just not true. Don't believe me? Check the archive.

I don't get why people like you post on 4chan. If you want highly controlled discussion, why the fuck are you even on this website? There are lots of websites on the internet where the mods actively defeat threads if they don't meet the "standard of quality" of the board. 4chan's lax moderation and anonymity are a blessing that, clearly, not everyone can appreciate.

/sffg/ is an extremely general general if you get my drift. It's not like a game general where eventually people just run out of stuff to talk about and start ERPing and whatnot. There's always new genre fiction coming out so there's always something new to talk about. I read both /sffg/ and regular /lit/ and over the past few weeks /sffg/ has unironically been far better than /lit/. People at least talk about published books in /sffg/. I doubt anyone who posts in Jordan Peterson/le not an argument man/Jewish conspiracy threads has ever read a book, and /lit/ has been flooded with them lately. Why do /pol/acks act exactly like the idea of the refugees they claim to hate?

You guys do realize that people change their opinions when new information arises and that there is currently a massive shift in white consciousness occurring, right? 4chan is ground zero for the spread of that information, whites are waking up in droves, and I'm sure that has an effect on people who moderate image boards as well. What you're essentially admitting is that you fundamentally don't understand what is going on and that it's confusing you so it must be a conspiracy, when in reality you're riding the intellectual equivalent of a horse while everyone else has upgraded to a Model T.

i have to admit 4chan has pulled a neat trick in being able to have racist content without getting blacklisted off the internet like dailystormer, etc. and i think part of it is that the marketing is all very subtle like having generic threads that will get tons of bumps have an unrelated product placement in the pic etc. so that organized boycotts against advertisers like they do against breitbart cant really work because no one knows for sure who is paying to have ads on 4chan and who is just paying social media interns to start ad threads without 4chans consent, they might lose some ad revenue in the short run doing it that way, but in the long term they sidestep any possible boycotts or blacklists, very ingenious, i wish 4chan was a public company so we could get their earnings reports etc. i love "outsider" companies like 4chan, worldstar, etc. that build up major web presence without any silicon valley techbro connections

This board is gone. Accept it. It's irreversible. Once /pol/ and r/incel shows up, the place is done.

Well-meaning users will fall to the bait. Even if they don't, polacks and incels can talk between themselves. They don't need the attention of serious lit posters, they just need the place to talk and act like pseuds. They're self sustaining.

There's no reason to use /lit/ anymore thanks to them. I come here for the writing critique generals and the meme-threads and that's it.
There's a good post once in a while but they're inevitably derailed. There's a thread about Hemingway rn and it took what, 15 comments for it turn into a "muh redpill" convo.

What could help is moderation, but that won't happen. I'm not even sure if we'd be better off with that, considering the fact that jannies delete lit threads and leave Jewish conspiracy ones up.

>well shit it turns out they don't want the redpill permavirgin KKK member shit on their board

>the spirit of this website
This mythology of 4chan being a bastion of free-speech I think is one of the serious problems with it. At one point this wasn't true at all (in fact I'd say it never really was and still isn't), for much of its history it was moot's site for himself and his friends to fuck around with and ban people with impunity for any arbitrary reason. The spirit of 4chan isn't some kind of romanticized antiquarian forum of free discussion and debate, it is weeaboo teenagers goofing around.

And even though the mythology of 4chan is this way it's not really that way at all, mods are still arbitrary dicks that won't hesitate to delete threads they don't like. But since Hiro took over they don't extend this to /pol/, even on boards that are not /pol/. It's literally degenerated into a safe-space.

At one point orthodox christians ruled this board, some other time it was third wave feminists who shilled Andrea Dworkin so hard, that people actually started reading her books. Shifts of power are inevitable, but it's not a secret that post-Trump (and I use that not as bait, because I really don't mind him as a president, but as a cut-off point) /lit/ has witnessed an influx of people who legitimately don't care about literature in any shape or form and are here solely to shitpost and push "scientific studies" with citations from "Free Domain Radio" and "The Foundation for Family Studies" or some other shit. If you have an agenda, great, but at least don't embarass yourself and us by proxy. What happened to this board in the last 48 hours? All the threads here are shit. Are we getting more traffic because of something recent?
It's strange how these apparent newfags never seem to learn
>Hey guys I'm far-right and reading Foucault for the first time, what should I expect?
Why even reply to this thread? It's not someone whose read Foucault and providing their opinion from a certain perspective. It's someone who hasn't even read the source material, making a thread with no real sort of impetus to get the discussion going other than bland, dull, histrionic political ressentiment. It's literally the most worthless kind of thread available. Even Evolaposting is leagues better, despite its dull frequency.

The problem isn't necessarily politics. Some of the more unique and interesting political discussion I've seen has been on /lit/. It's crossboarders treating /lit/ like /tv/ 2.0. I'm not usually one to get autistic about muh imageboard culture but most of the shitty threads come from people who obviously don't fucking lurk.
politics is a general subject much too beloved by cretins, too.

Another thing. I haven't popped into the Catholic Lit generals, but seems strange to me that it would be a recurring general, rather than the occasional thread about the topic. Religious literature isn't exactly an alien or niche topic of discussion, and it seems weird that Catholicism is getting singled out - does that mean we can only discuss Graham Greene in one thread? but that also, these threads of a Catholic religious bent will have to shun Dostoyevsky or Milton? Literally just go on the Catholic subreddit.

On the Catholicism thing:
Greene's part of a generation where there were a lot of converts and he got a lot people who wouldn't otherwise get published to get in print (he was the reader for At Swim Two Birds, for example)
Around him you have Muriel Spark and Evelyn Waugh and before that, a lot of English language greats were Irish. (Wilde is around the same point as Stoker, and the subject seeps in despite how Anglo-acting they both were)

While a Catholic gen could be justified, it's not justified with the current cretins you described running around. Most anons couldn't trace Greene's influence on the first half of the 20th C literature or English Catholicism, and the Catholics wind up correcting minor points of doctrine/faith from US protestant CatholicLARPers who should go elsewhere as you said.

this is the same for every meta thread on this site, it's infected nearly every board

Good luck. Any attempt I make on a legitimate thread typically involves heavy maintenance from my end just to keep it alive. Only like a sub-100 number of people who legitimately read or want to write visit this board, it feels like.
You're better off trying to establish contact with someone irl who lives near you who's opinion you trust and can talk lit with.
This board and site are cancer and it's tumor.

At this point it's a choice between living with a zombie chained to the wall in your room, or lying down in an open grave. At least I can leave the grave whenever I want.

You could just download download an offline version of the wiki and forget that this board exists. A much healthier choice.
