I envy those people who can drink their way through interactions with boring and/or weird people. When I get drunk, I just get irritable and super self-aware of how I'm not doing anything memorable with my life.

I see the cross, it’s silent, it stays a long time, my heart goes out to it, my whole body fades away to it, I hold out my arms to be taken away to it, by God I am being taken away my body starts dying and swooning out to the cross standing in a luminous area in the darkness, I start to scream . . . let myself go into death and the Cross: as soon as that happens I slowly sink back to life—Therefore the devils are back, commissioners are sending out orders in my ear to think anew, babbling secrets that are hissed, suddenly I see the Cross again, this time smaller and far away but just as clear and I say through all the noise of the voices “I’m with you, Jesus, for always, thank you.”

Is anything by Kerouac worth reading outside On the Road? I thought about picking up Dhama Bums.

As bad as he is, I think he's still better than Hemingway. Anyway, who are your favorite American modernist/post-modernist prose writers /lit/.

So I basically read his entire bibliography over the past three months, and I went from finding him fun and liked the pictures he created of being young and out and free, vs. the road trips, and the camping trips, ending with the despair and futility of it all to thinking he may have been one of the worst writers I've ever read in depth. The more I think about this man I think I would seriously considering murdering him if I met him in real life. His biggest problem is that he's literally mentally retarded, and writes self-inserts, yet continually misreads the situation in such obvious ways, then he has these 'wisdom' rants which either sound like somebody talking out of their ass about things they know nothing about or somebody getting drunk and overreacting to something. Anyway, I wasted my time with this hack and here's a brief guide to his works. I think the obvious gaffes are when he compares himself to Shakespeare in Mexico City Blues and when he compares himself to Melville in Dharma Bums. That's honestly when I started to despise him.

Novels
Town and City (Only Skimmed, written normally, honestly bad, very bad. No discernible style)
On the Road (decent, pretty bad in parts. Also, probably was heavily edited by Burroughs)
Doctor Sax (nonsense, unreadable)
Maggie Cassidy (decent, cozy, but forgettable)
Subterreans (good, but ultimately incredibly self-unaware)
Tristessa (Probably his best work)
Visions of Gerard (decent, forgettable though)
Dharma Bums (Very bad, would be decent if he didn't have the insufferable Buddhism/wisdom rants, I never read the final 30 pages I could not stomach it)
Desolation Angels (decent, bad in parts though)
Big Sur (decent, kind of pathe)
Satori in Paris (good, one of his best, he’s very senile here)
Vanity of Duluoz (decent, kind of pathetic)
Pic (pretty bad)

Experiments (honestly some of the worst things in print I've ever read, I guess if you're a big shot author and handsome then they'll let you publish anything)
Visions of Cody (horrific, skip)
Mexico City Blues (bad)
Scripture of Golden Eternity (horrific, skip)
Old Angel Midnight (bad)
Lonesome traveler (bad)
Book of dreams (bad)
Book of Blues (bad)

ITT: funny wikipedia biographies of authors.
>Kerouac found enemies on both sides of the political spectrum, the right disdaining his association with drugs and sexual libertinism and the left contemptuous of his anti-communism and Catholicism; characteristically, he watched the 1954 Senate McCarthy hearings smoking marijuana and rooting for the anti-communist crusader, Senator Joseph McCarthy.
>n Desolation Angels he wrote, "when I went to Columbia all they tried to teach us was Marx, as if I cared" (considering Marxism, like Freudianism, to be an illusory tangent).

>In light of what he considered beat to mean and what beatnik had come to mean, Kerouac once observed to a reporter, "I'm not a beatnik, I'm a Catholic", showing the reporter a painting of Pope Paul VI and saying, "You know who painted that? Me."

My favourite green flag is when an author is actually a raging conservative but you wouldn't guess it from their work or life.
