No. You could have a philosophy that justifies selfish or even monstrous behavior. But selflessness is one of the most successful ends of philosophy. Just like antinatalist cults who believed incarnation (and therefore copulation) is evil, philosophies that don't benefit the commons don't tend to last.

In all seriousness I think it's a natural progression from starting with the Greeks. Platonic theology plugs directly into the New Testament. Throwing a little tripfagging to promote Girard and suddenly hey presto we can sense an avenue down which humanity might find salvation for itself in the 21st century wasteland. But faith in an unmoved mover is the starting block for that line of thinking.

Catholicism has been doomed since Nicea. When the church surrendered its philosophical Platonic roots, it was inevitable they would adopt magical thinking and become a synthesis of any alien superstitions they encountered. Only monastics can really count as Catholics.
