I agree with what you've said and I felt the same.
It pissed me off because they felt like they were taking something away from you.
I also really like Samus. Somehow I came to the conclusion that out of all media, Metroid, somehow Metroid, the game where you backtrack, get powerups, find new and powerful weapons to kill enemies, ways to break the map and get around with the ice beam and space jump, and the game with the really cool music and nerve wracking planet exploding endings... Metroid is the game that puts you on an alien planet, all alone. "Look at that weird thing, look at that! What is that? What's going on here?" Of course in 1988 they weren't thinking about the lore, but if only they had leaned into it even more.
Also I'm not a massive hentai coomer anymore but I still think it's cool that Peach is #1 and Samus is #2. I remember on /v/ they had it figured out that they're the most popular characters for hentai.
