Yes, Lovecraft has a philosophical relevance that isn't found in Smith. It's very interesting to compare the two writers' strengths and weaknesses. I couldn't state that either is better than the other. But in my mind Lovecraft is the superior plotter, the way he builds up and foreshadows a story within the first person. He does also seem to have a better grip on scientific elements, and more of a philosophical hinterland which is feeding into the modern relevant you are alluding to.. Clark came to short story writing from poetry and it shows, the better prose writer, an aesthete, but an incredible imagination too, and more of a versatile writer across diverse genres and settings.

While I am talking about Clark; his sculpture, of ghouls, demons, aliens, and other weird images, seems to be turning up in random places even still. He made and sold many over a lifetime, I suppose many are still unaccounted for. If encourage anyone living near San Francisco or Northern CA to look at your local trinket shops for anything marked KA.
