Can someone who's actually read a fair amount of Marx explain how he saw the Paris Commune as something other than a colossal failure? I know a bit about the era and it seems to boil down to Parisians demanding to be given labor, producing very little, and then the campagne getting fed up with having to support national workshops. I don't see how he could spin it as workers demanding to run their own lives or something.

I really like Instrumentalities because it covers the early modern period, which isn't something you really see in fantasy. The 30 year war especially offers very fertile ground for stealing from, one of the most violent wars in modern history, where guns and cannons weren't quite good enough yet so everybody still fielded massed units of professional pikemen (who in turn had swordsmen with big zweihanders mixed in) alongside their arquibus infantry.

Any recommendations for some military-centric European rennaissance warfare/pike and shot titles?

Hey /lit, I need some advice. I'm looking for information on the Thirty Year's War, early 17th century European history, and Spanish history in particular. Binging Wikipedia only goes so far, and I'd like to know what history books you fine gentlemen would recommend for me? Easy reads, detailed personal lives, war, anything goes. Give me your best.

Doing research for a possible novel/RPG setting.
