Consider any book that's widely hated.

Finnegan's Wake, Gravity's Rainbow, Infinite Jest. Singing the praises of these books is likely to earn you scorn, people will fling insults and mockery.

Oh sure, they have justifications. They'll complain about unreadability, they'll complain about intentionally being obtuse. But at the end of the day, what is subversion?

Subversion is merely the act of contradicting values and principles. The negative reactions people will have towards these books, and the people who enjoy them, is indicative of just how much subverting these books actually do.

The above insults are the expression of these people's values being torn apart by these books, their expectations of what makes a good book being skirted around. These people (the overwhelming majority) have expectations that a book should make an effort to be readable, and yet here we have a set of books which eschew this very foundational principle and instead opt to do the exact opposite, to expend effort in becoming unreadable. These books are highly subversive for smashing the very core values that so many demand from their reading material.

Of course, not everybody gets upset at these books. But at the end of the day there is no book which will be considered subversive to everybody. There is no book which will destroy your sanity. That's just not how the real world works.
