The Japanese authors I have read obsess over creating a sense of bittersweet nostalgia for a wasted and far-off youth. They always write as if they are already dead; presumably because once you reach adulthood in Japan you might as well be.

Maybe she meant it in that instagram-riddled mindset. Not in the way I feel some anons genuinely grapple with it.
