Absurd. Whatever pedantry may be inherent to Bach & Beethoven's music is entirely transcended by their creative brilliance and romantic sensibilities. Shostakovich expresses easily as much fatalism and ugliness as he does "vim and vigor" (though I do not deny his masterful artistry). Schubert's chamber music alone sings far more strongly to my heart than anything from Chopin or Ravel.

If the great German composers can't be considered musical geniuses, no one can.

This looks very 80s/90s. To its credit it's a nifty painted artwork, of the kind we rarely see on new books, but that man doesn't look like Severian, more like a brigand.
