I don't disagree that much of Plato's Republic is a diatribe against democracy, and that the so called elite use his reasoning as justification for their actions. But the question has to be posed - is Plato right? For the good of society, for the sake of progress and stability, does leadership have to employ the Noble Lie?
I don't have an answer. I only hope that he is wrong.
