That's a classical motif and the easiest way to depict heroism in a single frame of art. The hero is fighting some kind of beast(s) and there's a damsel in distress. The degenerate ape creatures are lesser men and ugly malignant savages while the hero is of good breeding and the superior man in all regards. One may remove the damsel but then the picture becomes decidedly less heroic, same thing if the opponents are more noble and not some form of beast or another.

You can go for the hero taking a pose alone, but that's very artificial and much less dynamic. IIRC Elric was often illustrated this way and the difference in energy is very noticeable.
