4chan is full of shitposts but also one of the only places people actually speak their minds without filters. No profile, no karma, no post history to protect. No moderation to speak of. No propriety to uphold. If you're shit, you're shit. If you get an effortpost in return it makes your day. Any praise or assent feels genuine instead of part of some social game.

It's also full of people with absolutely no lives and nothing to do all day but autistically dig into some niche subject. I guarantee you have met some of the foremost experts on the planet on some ultra niche topic right here. Was it an important topic? Probably not.

That makes sense. It's a shame really. The truly nice thing about 4chan is the anonymity and the ability to truly seek knowledge free from the past. It doesn't matter what you thought in the last thread and, similarly, your contributions or failures aren't tied to an account/post history. 4chan used to be like those Tibetan sand paintings in that everything was gone in the end but I suppose archives really ruined that.

Small groups like this are less interesting because you run into the risk of creating an echo chamber or excluding someone who might have a genuinely good opinion or idea.

I feel a bit like someone in search of a lost city, but instead of gold and riches I just want knowledge and truth. Truth is much harder to come by than riches these days and it is worth a lot more. It also feels like a curse... to desire a community passionate about that but to see what has become of the internet which could be so, so much more. The web is a mess and so few care.
