How is it that Harold Bloom says Finnegans Wake rises the heights of Shakespeare and Dante and then compares Lord of the Rings to the Book of Mormon? I feel like this guy isn’t an original thinker but mostly loves and praises literature based on how elite and exclusive he thinks it is, and denigrates literature based on how popular it is with hoi polloi

Currently reading Scaramouch the Kingmaker, a sequel which picks up right where Scaramouche: A Romance of the French Revolution left off. The first book is about a 18th Century chud who throws in with revolutionaries to exact revenge on a marquis, and the sequel has him throwing back in with royalists because he falls for a royalist girl at the end of the first book. The character is unattractive, cynical, autistic with women and extremely perceptive with men
