I gave the first Black Company book about 200 pages before I gave up on it, which I attribute to the narration being rather boring. I understand that the events are being described by someone who's not a writer but I struggled to stay interested throughout the entire time. It doesn't help that I couldn't find any sympathetic characters or felt irritated by certain event being mentioned in the passing ("we battled for HOURS so close to death, then we battled even MORE even CLOSER to death").

What was I supposed to get out of all that?
