The idea is that a system based on contingent outcomes i.e. consequences is inherently irrational. In simple terms yes we can joke about Kant's autism... But, his system still holds strong. Just because the man has the intention of killing your children does not mean that through the act of lying your children will be murdered. In fact, Kant is supportive of self law in the form of rational agents having autonomy. I can easily hide my children, or stall the killer until the children escape. I can also just as easily defend my self with the use of physical violence in this scenario. The axe-man is acting irrational and without adherence to a workable universal maxim, thus possible actions can be argued for that may result in the saving of my children.
