Many people say that Tolstoy is superior to Dostoyevsky, but whenever people talk about what Russian authors affected them the most, it's always Dostoyevsky that is mentioned the most, and Tolstoy is just an afterthought. Which one is better, and how?
Pic unrelated, it's the only Russian pic i have that is SFW

More and more people are being depressed and feeling hopeless and alone, as the organic social conventions of religion and religious institutions have withered away. Are there any books that offer a way out of this? Maybe even create a new religion?

Is there a point to reading if the time spent reading could've been spent on making money?

Are there any books that deal with the psychological and existential realities of unemployment caused by automation and how to deal with it? Like how many jobs will soon become automated and a large amount of people will become chronically unemployable. The government could give them free money or they could form little communes, but the reality persists that such work will be completely worthless and without utility. Even if you were to make global communism a reality, most people will still suffer from the reality that all their work has no utility and could be done better by a machine. Unlike the Marxist idea of "unalienated labour", such unalienated labour wont do anything to give people happiness or satisfaction, since it will also rob them of their utility. Some experiments have been done with just giving people like this free money, but they would rather work an actually useful job and do actually useful work.
This reality is now looming on the horizon, but i rarely see any literature or philosophy on it.

Because organic identities (tribe, religion, family, ethnicity, nationality even) have been annihilated by the tyranny of individualism, but the longing for identity and community remains. So people pick them in the most superficial ways possible, as those are the only ones allowed to remain, exactly because they no longer threaten the hegemony of liberal capitalism.
