So far I've just read We Can Remember It For You Wholesale in an anthology, but looking to start The Man Who Japed soon, it's apparently one of his early, more lighthearted ones. Then I'll work my way up to the really weird post-pink-ray ones.

What makes a work of alternate history "good". Is it plausibility? Historical accuracy? Or should it merely aim to be entertaining?
And as a side question, what are some examples of really bad alternate history?

Are sci-fi authors like Philip K. Dick, J. G. Ballard and William Gibson memes, or actually worthw reading? I like sci-fi movies and would like to read more in the genre.

Recommend me 'literary' sci-fi.
