Foundation is a lot of fun. It's an interconnected series of stories based on Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Very cleverly done. Theme and scope over story, characterization over character.

If you're into robots and AI you might want to start with the robot novels, continue into the galactic empire novels and then to Foundation. But they're not as strong and you don't lose anything by using them as backfill once you've run out of Foundation books.
