I know this thread is cursed right now, but I've read Resenting the Hero by Moira J Moore and really liked it.
The female MC is cute in an autistic kind of way and charmingly pragmatic for most of the time and the setting was interesting, imo. It's about a world that doesn't like its human inhabitants and fights them with natural disasters, and magic-wielding pairs (kind of) of Sources and Shields need to protect the cities of them.
Dunleavy, the main character, gets paired as a shield with a source she really didn't want to get paired with and it's funny, charming, and a bit dramatic.
It's touted as romance, but so far, there wasn't any.
I liked it a lot.
