There are some good books in western fantasy but they are the exception rather than the rule. Just imagine trying to create a top ten list of the best fantasy books that came out in the last ten years. In contrast when it comes to anime, it seems there is a great deal to choose from. Not just the rare exceptions. For some reason western fantasy though seems to have nothing unique. Everyone wants to be the next Tolkien or now the next Martin. They will make a very intricate world and they will try to make it as realistic as possible and as gritty as possible and then after all that realism and grittiness and in depth lore ends up making the series more of a chore to get through rather than it being a fun adventure. Everyone is trying so hard to do anything but write fun and unique stories that western fantasy becomes a bloated boring mess.

Personally, I subscribe to the theory that he has already written both books and is only waiting to release them posthumously so he can avoid all criticism.

So when this lazy, fat fuck inevitably dies before finishing Dream of Spring, are we all in agreement that we will take a vote on which fanfiction ending will be considered canon?
GRRM always hated fanfiction. I can't think of a better revenge to vent out our frustration than to consider a fanfiction ending canon.

Is GRRM an embodiment of the mental decrepitude we see in modern authors?
>spent most of his life writing throwaway stories just to make it by and has no field of expertise
>he lucked out after a time and created a popular fantasy series
>wanted to deconstruct tolkien while having a tenuous grasp of the man's oevrue at best
>by contrast, his work is filled with shallow critiques of religion, monarchism, and patriarchy
>consistently deceives his fans about release dates, etc., and victimizes himself if he's attacked for being lazy
>has no sense of duty to his audience at the end of the day, and will NEVER finish his work
>is going to die early because he's a slob that overeats and is obsessed with food to the point of making it a big thing in asoiaf
>is at a venerable age when he should be sharing his wisdom, instead he blogs about sports

He is not going to finish the series is he /lit/? Did he lose all motivation because he got hollywood bucks? Did he run out of ideas? What gives?

Can anyone help me out here? I'm trying to remember the name of an author who advocated prostitution on the basis that it was the only way he would be able to sleep with attractive women.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't GRRM, but in my mind's eye I feel like he looked similar. He may have been a science fiction author. That's about all I've got.

Did Martin achieve his objective when writing A song of Ice and Fire?

Martin rejected the allegorical romance of epic fantasy, which basically means tearing out the guts of the genre: the wonder, the ideals, the heroism, and with them, the moral purpose. And replaced it with Realism.

No Ren Faire Middles Ages’, like Disney, and the fantasy authors had no idea of what a real medieval caste system looked like

And certainly not Victorian medievalism, i.e, chivalry, gallantry, fidelity to he crown and to a beloved idealized the Middle Ages

Did he achieve his objective?
