Goethe (pbuh) wrote a lot of poems about Persia and Islam. Was he more a muslim than a christian? I know that he said that he couldn't stand the image of the cross.

What are some examples of people who did science in the way or close to the way Goethe thought science should be? The only examples i can think now are psychoanalysis and Wittgenstein's later philosophy of language. I think Goethe's views on science are very /lit/ and it surprises me that people don't talk about it here

He is ruined entirely by his name. Who the fuck wants to say their favorite writer is named "Gerter". What a stupid fucking name. "Goethe" sounds great but "Gerter". I'll have to find someone else to say is my favorite writer.

One of the most prolific German writers, hardly ever seen on /lit/. I strongly recommend Faustus.

What's the most literal, faithful and straightforward translation of the Iliad in German? I want to learn the language. I need what's closest and most word-by-word to the original Greek.

The Italian Journey by Goethe

Often considered to be the greatest travel memoir of all time.

>If you treat an individual as he is, he will stay as he is, but if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.
Does anyone know what this quote from Goethe actually means? Like should you treat a person badly because you think he should have done more, he will do more?

I hate the German language. Please recommend me some stuff to read/learn to help me appreciate it, or at least not completely invalidate it. Thank you in advance

What did this guy write that's worth reading if I don't know German? Werther was great. Faust Part I was mildly enjoyable in translation but I'm not sure his poetry works well out of the original. What else of his novels, essays etc. is worthwhile reading?

What did Goethe mean by this?

What is it with the Germans and producing these absolutely titanic men in the arts? Goethe was basically an early version of this. No wonder Nietzsche, a German, came up with the idea of the Overman. Germany has had at LEAST two of them in modern history.
