Dune isn't even that great in terms of world building; why do you sci fi reddit transplants have such a hard time understanding the mythopoeic implications of using actual linguistics as a foundation for speculating on culture and the tack of civilization? Frank Herbert and all of the second+ generation fantasy authors were genre acolytes (some of them great, sure) grasping at the hem of Tolkien's coat and the great irony is that his son Christopher is the only writer who has ever published anything even remotely similar to what JRR did--and even he had the good grace to be ashamed of it.

Dune is a cool flick but if you consider it literature or consider it an astonishing feat of "world building" or some other meme you're a brainlet or a teenager or both

How can anyone claim to be a good person when they spend money on anything but the bare necessities to live. People are dying in Africa and they can be saved by a mere donation of 40$/month. Working people could rent a single room where they would live in and send hundreds of dollars to Africa each month. Yet despite this possibility to save lives people choose to spend their money on big houses and other useless stuff like fancy phones, expensive food, computers, books,...

Yet if I ask people if they consider themselves 'good' or just 'not evil' most of them would say they would say: "Yes I do". I thought killing people was considered as something only evil people do in Western civilization.

Does anybody here have any experience with programs that use voice synthesis to read? Kind of like a DIY audiobook. You can control who speaks (different packages), pitch, speed; the software (e.g., balabolka) has a lot of options on how to read the text since it first extracts all the text into a .txt, where you can have different settings, example, for where to pause and for how long.

I listen to almost everything on yt at x1.5 or x2 speed, but yt isn't really informative much and reading requires concentration and discipline, which have been sucked from me. So I was considering this to help me get back into reading. Or, at least, stop my stupidification.
