There is less and less room to escape it. English has already become a necessity for the third world to break their chains and wander north. All other languages (except maybe Mandarin or French) are just vanity. I speak Hungarian. I live knowing that my children will likely not be able to, or even worse, they won't care.

A pretty apt way to show how even someone with a C1 certificate can have an incredibly dull sense of what they are actually saying. You are clearly winning that argument, anon, but do consider poetry. Even with his admittedly lacking sense of this language, surely he enjoys Keats more than he would by reading a translation. Even if you are not sufficiently embedded in a language's culture you can still appreciate its original prose. I can't stand reading Nabokov, or Beckett in hungarian, the language defiles them beyond belief, and the resulting piece is only theirs by name and not by nature. Even a fucking child's mind reading of Finnegan's Wake is more enjoyable than the hungarian attempts at translating it so far. Same goes for Szerb Antal's Journey by Moonlight, but reversed.
