Can a woman appreciate Beethoven? I cannot imagine a woman sincerely identifying with the manly struggle for heroic action present in his music. For the same reason it is almost impossible to think of a woman as a coward, because only a man is capable of being a coward. We do not hold women to the same standards that we hold men. Now, a feminist will consider this to be a slight on our part, but it is basically true that a woman is incapable of cowardice, simply because she does not feel the call of duty in the first place. Her manly resolve toward brave, selfless action cannot falter as a man's can, simply because she does not have such an inner battle to begin with. It seems somewhat harsh to exclude women from the possibility of heroic action, but then, where in the world is there a single instance of a woman who does not appreciate Beethoven ironically? Where is a woman who feels personally that such musical themes represent her inner life? Where is there a single instance of a female philosopher whose summum bonum is not merely to dance, to feel pleasure and self-satisfaction? I cannot find one example where a woman starts from the premise that the problem is her own immorality and not restrictive ways of thinking that limit the passions and emotions which are the numinous treasures that lie hidden under all of man's oppressive and allegedly arbitrary edifices.
