In most works the artist expresses his identity and his experiences in life in various forms. A loner writes about his lonely life. An academic writes about academia. An American writes about being retarded. A farmer writes about his life on the farm. It's one of the reasons why create art in the first place. We want to express our consciousness, which is influenced by how we perceive ourselves and our lives.
There are lots of different aspects that shape your identity, race is just one of them, but it can be the biggest one depending on your upbringing. When you're black in a predominantly white country, or white in a predominantly black country, your race is gonna effect you in lots of different ways, you cannot avoid it. It's gonna have an impact on your life. That's why most art created by african americans has to do with racism, african culture or slavery. It's part of who they are. White people don't write about being white because race is unimportant in their lives.

Or, to summarize in one sentence:
>Das Sein bestimmt das Bewusstsein

I've read the manifesto and I want to tackle the first volume of Das Kapital next.
Can I just dive in or should I read anything else in preparation?
