Can somebody explain to me how we can understand any meaning at all in literature after Derrida?

While I've heard it said that the attribution to Derrida that "meaning doesn't exist" is false and not something he argued, the correction to that statement is usually along the lines of, "He says that meaning exists, just that you have to use another sign to indicate it which is only a representation". Surely If you take that to its extreme then in practical terms you can never get at the true meaning and might as well proceed as if it doesn't exists if you're interpreting literature or even laws? The next step after that is that everything's subjective, nobody can be right or wrong, everything's just fashion, and you're very close to nihilism.

Is there a way to move beyond Derrida? Because I haven't found any decent criticisms yet. I'm not even sure if I've got a clear explanation of his idea.

Given that Postmodernism is cancer, what's the best alternative for it?
A friend unironically suggested Maxism just because "they are fundamentally different and Marxism, unlike Postmodernism, is a materialistic ideology.
