You always see the question: should I start with X?

My question is: should I end on Y?

What is Y?

Please don’t disregard my question, I do believe it to be completely legitimate as a man can pursue knowledge and enrichment for 100 lifetimes and never end his journey. But what of us with the more utilitarian bend? I enjoy applying acquired knowledge to my life in so much as it helps me, but pondering things has led me numerous times to undesirable places mentally.

Or are we doomed to be forever trapped in our heads, carving ever deeper into our psyche, becoming more and more detached from physical reality?

>the book are you currently reading
I am currently reading Infinite Jest, Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, Ram Dass' Be Here Now, Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, and the Very Short Introduction series' book on the Meaning of Life.
>a book that has changed your life
William James' Varieties of Religious Experience.
>the book that had the greatest influence on you
William James' Varieties of Religious Experience.
>the book you think is most overrated
The Stranger.
>the book that changed your mind
Gibson's The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception.
>the last book that made you cry
To my memory, I have only ever cried to a book once, back as an adolescent when I still read fantasy novels: One of the books in Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders series. I was depressed, and there was a self-loathing character contemplating suicide.
>the last book that made you laugh
Infinite Jest. Half the appeal is how funny it is. In one of DFW's interviews he comments that the humor of Infinite Jest was one of the aspects that he heard complimented most often, but he did not himself think it was funny; that makes it even funnier.
>that book you couldn't finish
I read the Stephen Daedalus opening to Ulysses and got through the beach scene and then got distracted by other reading and am not currently terribly interested in picking it back up.
>that book you wish you read
The Bible. The beginning is so dry, but reading it any other way, especially New Testament first, is grotesque.

How does one go about making a serial killer character to be sympathetic or even somewhat likeable? He's literally everything a person would despise. I thought a serial killer could range anything from child rapist who mutilates his victims and stores them under a house to killing corperate scumbags, but that not having a psychological thrill really doesn't make him a serial killer anymore. Anything I can conjure up, ends up stripping his serial killer identity which completely ruins the purpose as this is suppose to be someone who is extremely intimidating. Thoughts?

The books I currently read reveal to other people that I'm just pretending to be smart(Orwell, Rand, Nietzche, the Greeks etc.). What books do I read to succeed at misleading other people into believing that I'm smart?
