What happened to Britain after mid 20th century? They had such a great supply of quality literature until that point, why did they stop producing good writers all of a sudden?

Does reading only help you to converse with other like-minded readers, or it improves your abilities with non-readers as well? I'm asking this because it's said that reading increases your breadth of knowledge which is a setup for good conversations, but most regular people aren't interested in the kind of niche knowledge found in books.
