The 1997 anime is ok. It has to use a much less sophisticated drawing style because the manga is super dense. Each page is almost a Durer level print (pic related).

It has to cut the entirety of the Black Swordsman Arc down to one episode, but to be fair this is mostly just introducing the main character and his quest for vengeance and is almost all action.

Still, it's so short in the show that you sort of forget it happened and forget to question why Guts ended up the way he did.

Some of the political details of the war get left out, but these aren't that great anyhow. The story is at its best when it lingers on supernatural lore and imagery, and unfortunately those panels have to speed by as scenes in a show.

Then the show ends on a cliff hanger and the next iteration picks up having skipped Lost Children, the best arc. The new show had a decent sound track but was rendered unwatchable by horrible cheap CGI used throughout that looks laughable. Parts aren't so bad, but the drama of other parts are ruined by the monsters looking like stupid blobs.

Albrecht Dürer was the king, and Gustave Doré the prince, but there have many fantastic printmakers.
