it's worth reading, but it's fucking boring. you can either read it or look up concise infographics on the internet. i have a chart simmilar to what is advocated in adler's book here:

Why does nobody write like Shakespeare anymore? I mean high dramas or comedies with poetic language and clever wordplay. Why does everyone insist on writing with 'natural dialogue' and churning out the most bland extreme realism?

most people on here just recommend skimming that book for the relevant bits, or consulting a summary.

The average person isn't reading highbrow philosophical literature though. If we're talking about reading as it concerns the masses we have to talk about books that the average person would likely be interested in -- "midwit" literature, in /lit/'s terms. This type of literature can just as easily be explained in a documentary, a podcast, a videoseries, an online lecture, or sometimes even an infographic, as it can in a book. The only difference is that the book takes much more effort and time than any other medium. Seriously, why would I spend my time reading 400+ pages of How to Read a Book when I can just look at pic related?
So no, reading will never be a popular hobby among the masses because it is an inefficient medium for what the masses like to consume.

Two other pieces of advice:
>REMOVE YOURSELF FROM ANY DISTRACTIONS/TEMPTATIONS.
If you are an avid masturbator, reading in your bed or in the bath or any other place your dick is easily accessible might not be a good idea. Similarly, if you are imageboard brain, you might want to remove yourself from places where you have access to wifi. Eventually, the goal should be to get rid of your temptations entirely -- whether this be cancelling your Wifi, castrating yourself, etc. -- so that you can live purely for the benefit of the soul.

>MAKE DETAILED NOTES. TRY TO ORGANISE YOUR NOTES NEATLY AND PUT A LOT OF EFFORT INTO THEM. DO IT AS IF YOU WERE EXPLAINING THE BOOK TO SOMEONE ELSE. GIVE YOUR OWN CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BOOK IN THE NOTES.
I personally use Microsoft Onenote and try to lay everything out neatly and accessibly, giving detailed, eloquent analyses of what I've read. I include pictures, quotes, colour codes, timelines, hyperlinks, etc. when necessary, but I'm diligent in my efforts not to overdo this so as to make the notes overly embellished and hard to navigate. This helps break the wall of mental separation between you and the text you're engaging with. Instead of just passively consuming the information, you are now actively involved in it, as a teacher and a critic. Even if you are not actually going to present your notes to others, it will still help to put yourself in the teacher's mindset. This will not only motivate you to read more but will get you thinking deeper about the texts you're reading.

I follow pic related if it's a non-fiction book requiring dedicated study, only I don't write in the book but organise my notes on Microsoft Onenote.
