I've been reading the Complete Works of Plato in order and just finished Crito. Why did Socrates love the same laws so much that were unjustly killing him? I don't understand why he feels like he owes them his obedience.
Living in Athens seems to him to force you into believing wholeheartedly in everything its government does. He knows the law failed in his conviction, and he knows the people who convicted him are unjust. Why does he fail to see an option in calling them out on their bullshit? Is it really just because he attended the trial and started participating in the system?

I'm planning to read Plato's Republic and I was wondering, is there anything I should read or things I should know prior to reading it? Anything to take in mind as I read it? It's my first time reading ancient Greek literature.
