Eddard Stark cleaning his sword under a weirwood tree seems like an insignificant moment but it's crazy how it foreshadows weirwood magic. 4 books later Bran sees visions of people performing sacrificing sacrifices to the weirwood trees feeding the blood to the tree. This is essentially what Eddard does: he kills someone and feeds the blood to the weirwood tree by cleaning his sword beneath it and letting the blood stream down into the soil. The Starks stopped performing sacrifices to the trees yet still continued the practice indirectly.

Asoiaf really has the best magic system in fantasy.
