Ready Player One. It will always be Ready Player One. This was funko pop aesthetics before funko pops existed.
I did read it very early on its initial post-publication period, when the "gen x redditor consoomer with hollow 80s nostalgia" archetype was just emerging and becoming possible to identify, but not yet crystalized. I almost want to argue Ready Player One did some of the legwork TO cement that archetype, since it served as a good shorthand way to sum up the ethos.

Ready Player One seems cringier. It seems like the author really believed what he was writing was cool. Like he thought people would be impressed by his love of 80s pop culture.

From these excerpts of Ready Player Two it seems more like a cash grab. And he's just trying to appease his readers. Uh... what's popular? Uh... Black Panther was big. Lets put in a Wakanada reference. I don't think he actually gives a shit about Black Panther the same way he cares about Back to the Future or ET.
