Who's your favorite character except for J R, Bast and Gibbs? For me it's either Crawley or Schepperman

Is Jack Gibbs the drunkest character of all time? He's incoherent for multiple pages sometimes.

weeeeew lad why didn't you guys tell me William gaddis is the funniest author of all time? I finished the recognitions and jumped right into J R. so far its a lot funnier.

I require a quick rundown on the start of this book. I read up to page 421 last year and im picking it up again. i remember most of it but wouldnt mind a refresher, why is bast doing all this for J R again. is it because he owes him $10 lol.

I'll admit that you're right for the most part. Very few exceptions. Pic related is the best exception I can think of. Incredibly realistic dialogue, and still entertaining and readable.

Fuck me I'm struggling with this one. I've made my way through some decently challenging material but I guess wasn't ready for this. Seventy or eighty pages in. I liked the very first exchange and the crazy physics teacher but haven't latched on to anything else. Is this a persevere kind of book or a revisit it in a year kind?

This has more gags, goofs, hijinks, tom-foolery, wackiness, zaniness, jokes, rambunctious behavior then all of pynchons books put together. What did gaddis mean by that?

This would have worked a lot better as a play.

So I'm enjoying this well enough so far (about 200 pages in) but I can't lie, this book is kind of kicking my ass. Half the time I don't entirely get what's happening or who the fuck these characters are supposed to be or what their relation to each other is. Do you start understanding it more as you keep reading or should I accept that I'm a hopeless brainlet? (doesn't help that I have maybe the shittiest edition in existence)

Also Mrs. Joubert sounds like a major qt

This is my first Gaddis. I have The Recognitions, but a few people here said JR was a good place to start. No regrets so far. Did anyone read The Recognitions first? How does JR hold up?
