You don't feel "emotionally invested" in the language you are learning, because your reason for learning it is a retarded 4chan meme. Learning a language just to read /lit/ in that language is a ridiculous waste of time and energy. Learn a language to interact with the speakers of that language, any ancillary benefits like reading material in the source language is just a perk.

>So far I'm thinking psychology.
>Every time I've read a psychology book it has changed my behaviour, the way I interact with people and how make decisions. In a positive way.

Sounds more like self help books masquerading as 'psychology'. Nothing wrong with self help books, more people should read them, but actual psychology is pretty dry stuff.

Honestly learning a second language has probably been the most rewarding 'subject' I've ever taken. Learning Spanish (native English speaker) has opened so many doors and done so much for my personal life. Really helped develop my social skills when travelling overseas, allowed me to meet a cute grill who is now my fiance, etc. What language you study doesn't really matter, although something relevant and widely spoken is more useful (Spanish, Russian, etc) than Estonian or Tagalog.

>and I’m guessing I need to start reading Plato next and the like, but I want to know why?

I don't agree that knowledge has to be in some sort of linear a to b route. Alternate between Plato, Descartes, Locke, Chalmers at the same time. It's so boring to approach literature/philosophy from beginning to end.
