Liberal thought ends with Rousseau. He saw that the increasing reliance on others for the necessities ended not in freedom but in slavery. Today citizens are not "forced to be free," as Rousseau mandated, and as such they are little more than slaves. We do not act according to the general will, which Rousseau knew was more than just a function of our individual wills.

Childhood is Lockean. Adulthood is the realization of the primacy of Rousseau's thought in the Liberal tradition.
