This is some of the best genre fiction ever written, you'll dig it unless you are a woman. You can munch thru it in a few days and feel refreshed.

Imagine how crazy a miniseries based on this would be

I've read 8 Black Company books and can barely bring myself to read 9. Keep restarting it over and over, then letting my interest fade. Book 1 was great and I've enjoyed bits of the series since then, but holy hell the last few books have been a mess of storytelling.

I was a huge GOT fan since my older brother showed it to me in the mid-2000s. Clash and Storm were obviously the best, but Feast and Dance remained good.

It ended in shitty tropes on TV.

I chalked it up to Hollywood shit.

Then I got into pic related. It was fucking awesome. Reminded me a bit of Ninja Scroll with the Ten Who Were Taken, with plenty of grit and good character worked in to make it more fleshed out. The first was amazing. Shadows Linger was even better. The White Rose was good, but not great and fell into tropes and felt rushed.

Is this the fate of all gritty, "realistic" fantasy that also wants to have an epic arc? I saw this in Revelation Space too for sci-fi. You can make your early books and stand alone novels slower paced and the characters very human, but then you end up having to totalt switch tones and rush the conclusion.

Kind of sad.

Thanks for the recommendation /lit/. This first one was top notch. Shadows Linger was absolutely fantastic, even better.

White Rose seems a bit more classic fantasy and isn't as gripping, but I'm going to finish it.

Questions:
1. Are the later arcs more like the first two books? Do they keep the same characters? One of the drags is that I liked young Croaker (figured he was early 30s in the first one). I don't know about a mercenary company of 50-70 year olds.

2. Any other series like this?

Reviewers suck. They keep comparing it to Game of Thrones. I really like GOT, particularly Clash of Kings and Storm of Swords, but they're more historical fiction set in a fantasy world. I want more grimdark fantasy action.

Finished 2nd book in the Black Company series - it's alright but I'm not that keen on it, is it worth continuing?
