I'm really not sure if you two are saying abstract art was positive or negative, but the usual opinion seems to be that it was a negative thing. I hear a lot of ignorant people calling it "ugly" or "lazy" but that is so far from the truth.
If you spend even a small amount of time learning about art history you realize what a complete revolution it has been - from cave paintings to expressionism there was never a more profound stylistic discovery. Abstract art was like discovering a new continent psychologically - it's effects and influence are so widespread that they are impossible to measure.
