What do people see in this book?

It's treated as this great young rebellion thing but nothing happens and the protagonist doesn't learn anything.

I've read it when I was 15 at the time when I had the worst relations with my parents. Went on a student exchange to Bumfucknowhere, France, didn't know any french, the french family hosts didn't any English, got sick on the plane, didn't see anyone I knew for 3 days.

Seemed like the absoloutely best time to read this, read it in one go, honestly most disappointing piece of art ever.
