I have to add that SW fans are partially to blame for the horrible quality of the novels. I understand that the movies (old and new) weren't really giving the authors all that much to work with but if the fandom was in general better read and unwilling to buy any SW branded crap no matter how bad it was, the novels could have been better.
It probably doesn't even matter know, with how Disney ran the franchise in the ground.
