Brevity is underrated, fantasy series which exceed the length of LotR are trash by default. Short stories and novellas are usually the best format, unless the author has a particularly epic story to tell that warrants the excessive amount of words, even then a novel's worth of text should be enough.

Multiple stories set in the same universe is another thing entirely though, and shouldn't be conflated with slow narratives spanning multiple books and containing multitudes of filler content.
