"Misery" is a state of human mind that is correlated with certain brain centers activated/inhibited and certain concentrations of several biochemical species in them.
Pain isn't some sacred gift from God, it's just another neural mechanism.
There are documented mutant humans that don't have feeling of pain. There are people that aren't prone to depression.

It's all in the genes and we could change it if we wanted to. But it's so much easier to sanctify our defects instead..
