Why isn't this work more well known? It presents an extremely important difference between causality and truth, and clears up the confusion between them. Schopenhauer illustrates how searching for a first cause is a contradiction, for a cause must follow an effect just as much as an effect must follow a cause, and searching for a first cause is as arbitrary as saying the number 1 is the first number (0 precedes 1). Since the principle of sufficient reason is given to us a priori, the question of why the universe exists is a purely human one. The idea that a supreme being created the universe is a subjective truth.

>Realism overlooks the fact that the so-called being of these real things is absolutely nothing else than their being represented, or if it be insisted, that only the immediate presence in the consciousness of the Subject can be called being represented; or, if one insists in calling only that which is in the immediate present of the subject's consciousness an actual representation, then it is just an ability to be represented potentially. The realist forgets that the Object ceases to be Object apart from its reference to the Subject, and that if we take away that reference, or think it away, we at once do away with all objective existence.

Conversely, if we desire to abstract from the subjectivity of the Subject, yet to have something over, the contrary takes place, and this leads to Materialism.
