What does “ought” mean, exactly? What does “should” mean? What is “good”? The words might as well be meaningless. In describing actions and their effects, we can only understand them by how much we desire them, and how much we benefit by them. To say that I should do action A is really to say that I would be better off if I were to do action A. There is no duty or obligation here. It is simply the case that action A would result in the greatest result for myself.

The moral life is equivalent to the life that is most preferable for the self. There is no reason to live a life that you prefer less than another. If you had any inclination to live some other life instead, then that life would simply be the most preferable life, and the same principle would hold true. There is no greater moral axiom than that you should do what you prefer. We are not driven by reason, but non-reason: emotions, desires, preferences. With reason alone, there’s no reason to do anything.
