He didn't go with his original plan to utilize a timeskip, which would allow his characters more breathing room and development, and killed off too many characters for satisfying stories to unfold, and ultimately, he opened up so many plotlines as large as the Grand Canyon, he would need 10 books to wrap it up and it would STILL not be satisfactory. ASOIAF is a doomed series.
His legacy will be inexorably shit, that's why he's not finishing the books, so he actually can keep whatever legacy remains. Quite an ironic twist of fate for GRRM, but he deserves it.

He's always had his eye on writing for television anyway, even back in the 90s. He, in 20/20 hindsight, really only used books as a leverage to get to where he is. Fuck, I think he wrote for fucking video games (Rings of Elder or whatever) rather than the books, that worthless medium. Of course, he now wants an Marvel comic book (MCU-styled specifically) universe for his work to be prostituted on television (pic rel), and he of course still heralds his false sense of perspicacity to compare himself to Tolkien. No wonder GRRM's books always felt like they were written for the big screen (or just "prestigious" television in general since he spent decades writing for it from the looks of IMDB), kind of the same way the Harry Potter books feel like reading a book that was tailored to be a movie script ecranisation with relative ease, rather than reading an actual book.
