Why is Nagarjuna a Mahayana author not a Theravadin?

>Read the Pali Canon
>Think about Theravadin beliefs
>they are all just a softer, less explicit version of Sunyavada - essentially you have to become a monk, get rid of all the hindrances, get rid of attachments and see into the nature of reality as impermanent and conditinoed to reach Nirvana

>Read the Mahayana sutras
>Think about Mahayana beliefs
>They are full of celestial beings, 'buddha-nature', hinduised chants - basically you don't even need to become a monk you can just be a super-nice guy and pray to the appropriate bodhisattvas and everything will turn out a-ok

And yet ol' Naggy is considered part of the latter rather than the former. His letter to a friend seems a lot more Mahayanist (mentions yoga and bodhisattvas and worldly stuff), but the Mul, the Sapatati, the dispeller of disputes - all seem to be against the sort of stuff you find in Mahyana
