>I would love to become more familiar with Spanish history. Can you recommend any good English language popular histories? I stress "popular." I am not looking for academic tomes about changing patterns of land use, but anecdotal history rich in details of battles, betrayals, love affairs, murders, and similar juicy stuff.

>The way history is taught today is more socioeconomic trends and things like that, which…I don’t know if it’s more valid or less valid, but it’s certainly more boring,” he said. “[I read history for] the wars and the betrayals, who stabbed who in the back, who was having an affair with whom, and to me that’s the juicy stuff of history. That’s what makes history fun.

>Calls Tolkien dishonest because he didn't explain Aragorn's tax policy

I actually really enjoyed the books but I read them at a time when I assumed they were going to finish, theirs no point blue-balling yourself when GRRM inevitably eats himself to death before finishing them.

Not finishing the last part of your ebin fantasy series is what all alpha writers do. Let someone else deal with that bullshit once you're dead. Beta authors plot out and plan a story and then deliver it, editing it down to precisely what's needed and nothing more, giving the reader a strong ending maybe even in the same book the story started in. Chad writers never plan, they write as much shit they can come up with and don't care if it goes anywhere or serves some purpose, if they get popular not even their editor can stop them from bloating one book into several, and then when you don't know how to tie it all together then you just stop writing.

His books actually explains perfecly his endorsement of Biden, and I don't see how the author's personal life can't be up for debate. Arthur C. Clarke molested brown kids, we can't ever talk about that ever? Or how about Gene Wolfe dying, I guess that's just a part of his personal life and we can't ever talk about anything else besides the books themselves without ever referencing the author.

Man, you nincompoops wannabe mods are the worst. If it's totally against the rules then I would be banned, your whining about it is just pathetic, it does nothing and you're just trying to bait people into actually going off-topic, like I'm doing now.

“Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone – they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?” – (GRRM on Tolkein

I feel like Martin hates the fact that it took him so long to reach his current level of fame. He basically doesn't give any fucks about his fans now, he hates his new fans and has forgotten about his old ones.

He's just a bitter old man who doesn't care about anything anymore, that's why he won't lose weight, that's why he won't finish ASOIAF, etc.

Don't worry, soon your government will force you into eating factory grown meat so you can remain as fat and stupid as you are now without destroying the planet.

I feel like he's a hipster and he's completely stopped giving a shit now that he's gone mainstream.

Maybe he's angry that he only became "appreciated" when he was already old aged. He definitely has resentment towards his modern fanbase.

Who gives a fuck? I tried to read "tuf voyaging" and it felt like it was written by an autistic 15 year old boy.

Can't we all just agree that the show started to go downhill after the first few seasons anyway? It went from good, to boring but well made, to rapidly descending into complete shit.

Why do pseuds spend potentially hundreds of hours reading a series of books less intelligent and well executed than the television series it inspired?

What do you mean by tone? Books that read as if written by an autistic horny fat virgin? The weak grasp of medieval society that comes from an atheist educated by American marxists? The spastic style that comes from trying to pretend that your high fantasy series is unpredictable by jumping from character to character and subject to subject?

GRRM said today he expects the Winds of Winter by 2016. What that actually means is like 2023, right?
