I work for an old japanese woman. She has several guest houses, apartments and a hot spring. Who are the contemporary heavyweights in fiction? Who are people talking about?

I feel out of the loop because I read mostly non-fiction and classic fiction. I want to read a good contemporary novel, but don't know who is even good.

I know Houellebecq, Doughty, McEwan, I don't know if these are heavyweights, just names I've come across.

I don't have a problem with genre fiction, but was wondering about something less high-concept.

How do advances work? I always see in movies or books advances being mentioned or writers who send in pages at a time to an agent or a publisher.

What is this based on? How does one go about shopping an unfinished manuscript and getting an advance on it? Or is this not possible?
