My SF+F books are mostly second hand paperbacks with little resale value or particular rarity, no calf-skin or dragon parchment here. I also keep my annotations brief and in the margins/white space. It would be another matter with hardbacks and prestige format books - but they are so unwieldy that I hardly own any. I don't do it with everything either, but Wolfe is an author who demands navigational help.

I've used notebooks in the past, mostly spider diagrams with branching ideas and copied quotes that i liked. Pic related is one I did for Emphyrio. These are fun to make but they tend to make less sense when referring back to them, whereas annotations keep observations and findings close to the text.
