I would choose Steinbeck, I like his stuff but there's much of it I haven't read. Ideally I want something both insightful and entertaining for 10 years in solitary confinement, and his works have both enough for me. I'm reading Grapes right now.

I knew this book was fucking slow, but I didn't think it would be this slow. I thought I could read this after reading East of Eden but Grapes just seems like it's going to be a slog. I have nothing else to read though. Might as well just trek through it. I think that's the point of the book. A trek to California. It's fitting that Steinbeck wrote it that way, then.
